somatic inquiry
Meeting the Root of your Suffering
THE METHOD
Somatic Inquiry is an awareness-based, body-led approach that works with the understanding that much of our conscious suffering is shaped by unconscious beliefs, identities, emotional repression, and protective strategies held within the body.
These unconscious patterns often developed early in life as intelligent ways of meeting unmet childhood needs. Over time, they can become the very structures that shape how we relate to ourselves, others, and the world - showing up as looping mind patterns, recurring emotional states, reactivity, chronic bodily tension patterns, addictive tendencies, insecure attachment bonds and many more.
This method offers a way to compassionately bring what has been unconscious into awareness, through direct, embodied experience.
Bridging Mind and Body
Mind and Body are not separate. Thoughts (words and images) and bodily sensations (emotions, energy, or contraction) are constantly informing one another.
Unprocessed emotional energy often reinforces painful belief and identity. Rather than trying to change beliefs directly, Somatic Inquiry works at the level of sensation and emotion - with awareness and loving invitation. Beliefs and trapped emotion dissolve naturally. Presence is not then something we create; it emerges as resistance reduces.
The Role of Awareness
This work is set from the foundation of mindful awareness. The aspect of us able to observe thoughts, images, sensations, and emotions as they arise and pass. Yet this “observer” perspective is not about distancing or bypassing experience, but about creating enough space to meet it safely and honestly.
Somatic Inquiry goes a step further than traditional mindfulness as the body and mind are invited to reveal what has been held beneath the surface, at a pace guided by choice, capacity, and organic nervous system regulation.
Allowing an unwinding of protective patterns, not because they are wrong, but because they are no longer needed in the same way.
How DOES IT WORK?
De-programming unconscious patterns of suffering.
The work is based on a simple but powerful principle:
When we feel triggered or emotionally overwhelmed, what we are experiencing is usually a combination of
thoughts, emotions, and body sensations, happening all at once.
In the Inquiries, these elements are gently separated and met one at a time.
Thoughts are noticed as words or images
Attention naturally moves to emotions and bodily sensations
Sensations are met directly, without trying to change or fix
By skilfully asking the body certain questions, we begin to uncover the emotional charge beneath beliefs and identities that have been driving our experience, often for many years.
As the underlying emotional energy is allowed and processed, painful patterns such as self-sabotage, chronic tension, compulsive behaviours, attachment dynamics, and persistent mind loops can begin to unwind organically.
Making the Unconscious Conscious
Many of the rules we live by are unspoken and unseen. Internal rules about who we must be, how we must feel, or what is allowed or not allowed. These rules are often held in the body as emotional contraction or suppression. Hidden from view, until the right question is asked.
Somatic Inquiry is an organic process of de-programming from these internalised rules.
This is not about forcing change, but honouring what once served as an important protective function. Allowing these aspects to be felt, seen, validated and released.
Safety, Capacity, and Choice
The body and nervous system operate through a hierarchy of safety. This work makes conscious this hierarchy.
Sessions are paced according to your capacity. Nothing is pushed, and nothing is forced. Over time, you develop the ability to recognise how safety, contraction, and openness are experienced in your own body, not as theory, but as lived knowing.
What This Work Can Support
The softening of chronic tension patterns in the body
Uncovering the hidden identities and beliefs driven by unconscious emotional triggers
Embodying awareness of the emotional roots of attachment and relational patterns
Interrupt painful mind loops and reactivity
Develop an embodied understanding of your own nervous system
Build a self-guided practice for meeting future challenges
The Process
Sessions usually begin with Facilitated Inquiry, where you learn the tools and experience the process directly. Over time, sessions will shift toward Mentoring, with the aim of empowering you to work independently.
The intention is not for you to rely on us indefinitely, but to develop a lifelong skill set for meeting yourself honestly and compassionately whenever Suffering arises.
The timeline of this work varies for each person and is not the focus. The work is about awareness - making what is unconscious, conscious — and allowing change to unfold in its own time.
We also directly work with patterns of sabotage and avoidance early on in the path,
An Honest Note
The work contextually is simple, but it is not always easy.
It will challenge deeply ingrained patterns that once helped maintain Safety, Connection, and Belonging, even if these exact patterns contribute to our deepest suffering. This suffering is often familiar, and because of this it often feels safer, than meeting and feeling the Emotions driving them. This is Repression.
This is the Work.
Our goal is to remind you of this body intelligence. That the body has always known how to come back home.
Nothing within ever broken or wrong, just information guiding us back, again and again and again.
